Washington County teenager to be featured in ‘American Idol’ premiere

When the newest season of “American Idol” premieres on Sunday, keep an eye out for a young Alabama singer with a fondness for Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and other classic influences.

Meet Triston Harper. Back in 2021, Harper, then 12, was attending Simon Middle School in Conway, Ark., when a video of him performing Presley’s “That’s All Right” created a stir. Despite his age Harper’s confidence on guitar and vocals stood out, as did sharp attire. “He has always loved suits,” his grandmother Tami Greenlaw told a local TV station, “even as a child. He’d wear one everyday if he had more.”

More recent photos on Harper’s Instagram and Facebook pages show that he attends Leroy High School in Washington County.

“American Idol” premieres at 7 p.m. Central time on Sunday, Feb. 18. The two-hour episode will focus on audition candidates hoping to make it to the show’s Hollywood Round. Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie return as judges, with Ryan Seacrest again hosting.

Episodes air on ABC and can be seen on demand and on Hulu the day after their premieres.
